“The becoming must be our own doing.”
Bre's great-grandmother said that. They'd found a butterfly struggling to emerge from its cocoon and reached in to help. She stopped the little hand.
This interaction stuck with Bre, inspiring a poem that turned into a manuscript about becoming. That’s where the text “the transformation was worth it” came from.
The butterfly in this piece is intersex, because nature has always been queer, and it has never needed our permission to be. The pansy is there for what it's always meant: queer identity, tender and deliberate.
The becoming is different for everyone. It is always ongoing. It is always worth it.
